What's in a Proctorio Recording? The Full Breakdown

TL;DR

A Proctorio recording contains your webcam feed, your screen capture, audio, and a metadata track of behavioral events. The screen capture follows the OS-level capture API — meaning anything excluded at that level (like a system overlay) is absent from the saved file.

A Proctorio recording is a multi-track file: webcam, screen, audio, and metadata. Your instructor and any reviewer can scrub through it after the exam, watching any moment that was flagged.

Track 1: Webcam

Continuous video from your camera. What's in frame is in the recording.

Track 2: Screen

Continuous capture from the OS screen-capture API. What the OS reports as visible is in the recording. What the OS excludes (system overlays, accessibility surfaces) is absent.

Track 3: Audio

Microphone audio for the full exam. Reviewed for second voices and audio anomalies.

Track 4: Behavioral events

Timestamped flags for window-focus changes, head movement spikes, gaze direction shifts, key behavioral events. This is what powers the suspicion score and the jump-to-flag UI for reviewers.

What this means for an overlay

An overlay positioned near the exam question and never visible to the OS screen-capture API is absent from track 2. Reading it produces no flag on track 4 because your gaze stays in the question area. No audio cue on track 3. Nothing visible on track 1 (it's on your screen, not behind you). Across all four tracks, the overlay is invisible.

Frequently asked questions

How long are Proctorio recordings kept?

Varies by institution. Common retention is 1–3 years, sometimes longer for academic integrity cases.

Can I request my own recording?

Through your institution's records office, sometimes. Not directly from Proctorio.

Will Lockdownify get me caught?

No. Lockdownify is filtered out of every screen-capture pipeline at the operating-system level — before a single pixel is ever encoded. LockDown Browser, Honorlock, Proctorio, Zoom, Teams, and Meet all read the same OS frame buffer, and Lockdownify is excluded from it. We re-test against every major proctoring tool weekly. If you ever do get flagged, we refund your subscription and reimburse the exam fee.

What platforms does Lockdownify support?

macOS 13 Ventura and later, and Windows 10 and 11. Both desktop apps ship today.
